Voting begins in Syria
The polls for the presidential election opened this Tuesday in response to the civil war. President Bashar al-Assad is suspected to easily win. According to western countries and opposing groups other candidates were doomed from the start. Syria hasn't had very fair elections before. 14 years ago, al-Assad won by 99% of votes.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said they should not hold on the vote. He thinks they need to send a message to al-Assad's opponents. The Syrian election has to be held under the new constitution. This will show the country is moving forward."It's a coronation of Assad, it's a celebration of his ability to survive the violent storm and basically go on the offensive," said Fawaz Gerges, a professor of international relations at the London School of Economics.
The election takes place during a bad time. A lot of conflict has happened. It has killed over 150,000 people. Voting will only take place in places controlled by the regime. Some countries will observe the election. More information at http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/03/world/meast/syria-election/index.html?hpt=wo_c1.
