Six Climbers Missing on Mount Rainier
In Vancouver, Washington six climbers are missing and are assumed to be dead. Information was found on Sunday and the climbers were on Mount Rainier. There was said to be an avalanche or fall. The National Park service said they were last seen Wednesday. They were preparing to camp at night.
The Park Service said searchers on Saturday located climbing gear and detected signals from avalanche beacons used by climbers at the top of the Carbon Glacier, at 9,500 feet. The site was 3,300 feet down below where the climbers were last seen. A fall like that, would give no chance of survival according to The Park Service. The climbers were supposedly last seen at Liberty Ridge.
Gorden Janow, a director of programs at Alpine Ascents International, said they plan to coordinate the release of the names of the victims with The Park Service. However, he said that Matt Hegeman, a veteran climber who had reached Rainier's summit more than 50 times was the group's leader. “We’re still in a state of shock,” Gorden Janow said. Another climber was Mark Mahaney. He was a 26 year old man who loved climbing and has climbed Rainier once before.
Randy King, the superintendent of Rainier National Park, said the accident was “a horrific loss.” About 10,000 people a year climb Rainier. Liberty Ridge, where the accident happened, is a more painful and difficult route than the others. Few people choose to travel through that path. This could be the worst accident of the mountain in decades. Find more about it at http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/02/us/six-climbers-are-missing-on-mount-rainier.html?_r=0.
