Forest Fire Rages Over 1500 Acres in New Jersey

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving forest fire in New Jersey that has consumed at least 150 acres and has forced the evacuation of 40 homes and at least one school in Ocean County.
Officials say the fire broke out late Thursday morning in Beachwood near the Berkeley Township border and spread rapidly amid high winds. Toms River Intermediate South, a middle school, was closed early as a precaution and students were taken to the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River. The district says the students are safe and will be sent home on their normal bus routes. Several homes in the path of the blaze have been surrounded with pyro-suppression units to protect them, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato. Some residents were asked to turn on their yard sprinklers as firefighters tried to douse the fire. "There are about 40 homes nearby that are in potential danger. So they’ve been instructed to put on their sprinkler systems and just kind of keep their houses and their properties moist,” said Larry Hajna with the state's Department of Environmental Protection. Melissa Masker described heavy smoke and giant flames that leaped above the treetops. She snapped a photo of the blaze and says that as she took it she could feel the heat of the fire. Forecasters issued a fire weather watch through Thursday evening. They say a combination of low humidity and strong winds could spread any brush fires that develop. One witness captured the fire before it had spread to more than 150 acres. Information from NBC News |

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A central Florida elementary school has stopped a long-standing practice of serving students Mountain Dew before standardized tests.
Florida Today reports that a woman contacted local media outlets after learning that students were being served three tablespoons of soda and some trail mix before taking the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Brevard County schools spokeswoman Michelle Irwin says they've advised officials at Creel Elementary School to provide only water to students. Irwin says Principal Kathryn Eward started serving soda and trail mix about 10 years ago after reading about its positive effect on students taking tests. The newspaper reports that Eward says it was part of an effort to get kids excited about the FCAT. The soda was served in small paper cups. ( Sadly) Now the students get water and trail mix. Moment of Silence for the Boston Marathon Bombings
By: Britton White
April 18, 2014
At 2:49 p.m. on Tuesday, one minute before a year had past since the Boston Marathon Bombing, a monument was held for the victims and the families. Boston's Old South Church rang its bells as the flag was hosted up the flagpole as a chorus sang 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' Former Mayor Thomas Menino, Vice President Joe Biden, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, and current Mayor Martin Walsh joined the chorus, and the police force held their hands in salute.
We all remember the day we heard about the Boston Marathon Bombing, and all these people have come to honor the injured and killed from this tragedy. 260 civilians were injured, 3 were kill, 16 lost limbs, and 1 person died afterwards. The family, friends, Massachusetts Representatives, and more all came to recall this with a moment of silence after 'The Star-Spangled Banner' was over. Even president Obama held a moment of silence of his own to honor these people. Menino gave a speech to the crowd, that urged Boston to stay strong; his words were:
“To the family and friends who will always miss their loved ones, you are strong at this broken place. To the victims whose long journey toward healing has just begun, you are strong at this broken place."
If you were here last year, then you will probably remember when we had our own little monument. It was when Mrs. Heart ran the last part of the marathon with some of the students running with her. You new students here probably wouldn't know what I am talking about, but you may remember hearing about the Boston Marathon Bombing. The point is that we held a remembrance, and now, a year later, the State of Massachusetts is holding an annual event and a moment of silence. Even if we don't give a moment of silence, we should still honor the people that have struggled from this tragedy and keep them in mind.
